Our Process (Step-by-Step)
1) Site visit & quote We measure, flag utilities, check drainage/sun patterns, and recommend a grass blend and timeline.
2) Removal & soil prep We strip out existing turf/weeds and loosen the top 4–6″. We blend in quality topsoil where needed, set final grade, and rake to a smooth, firm finish so sod sits level and drains correctly.
3) Starter nutrient & pre-moistening We apply a root-starter fertilizer and lightly moisten the soil if it’s hot or dry to help sod knit into the base.
4) Precision installation We start along a straight edge (driveway/walk), lay in a brick-pattern (staggered joints), butt seams snugly, and fit curves cleanly. On slopes, pieces are laid across the slope for stability, then the area is rolled.
5) Immediate watering As we complete each section, we water thoroughly so the topsoil under the sod is moist—not just the sod itself. Early, even coverage is vital the first 10–14 days to drive rooting.
6) Clean up & care briefing We blow off hard surfaces, tidy the site, and leave you with a simple, week-by-week care plan.
After-Care: Your First 6 Weeks
Day 0–14: Rooting phase
- Keep the sod and soil consistently moist. In warm/dry spells, use shorter, more frequent sets to prevent edges from drying.
- Aim for morning cycles; add a brief afternoon top-up if wind or heat nags.
- Minimize foot traffic and keep pets off.
Week 3–4: Transition
- Check rooting with a gentle “tug test.” If you feel resistance, start shifting to fewer, deeper waterings (every other day).
- First mow when the lawn reaches mowing height and the surface has had a day to firm up (to avoid ruts).
Week 5–6: Establishment
- Move toward a deep, infrequent schedule (about 1″/week as conditions require; early mornings).
- Keep an eye on rainfall and seasonal changes.
Mowing & Fertility Basics
- Mowing height: Generally 2.5″–3.5″ for cool-season blends; mow often enough to remove ≤⅓ of the blade.
- First mow: Around weeks 2–3, once the sod has begun to root and the surface has dried slightly.
- Fertilizer: Starter at install; after establishment, choose an organic or low-input program tuned to Victoria’s rainfall and irrigation.
- Weeds: Focus on cultural strength (mowing height, deep watering). Delay herbicides until sod is well established; spot treatments only if truly needed.
What Type of Sod Do I Need?
Most Victoria lawns do best with cool-season blends that balance color, durability, and shade tolerance—often a mix of fescue, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass. We’ll match the blend to your site (shade, traffic, irrigation). Local producers grow blends and even big-roll formats for speedy coverage on larger sites.
Timeline & What to Expect
- Consultation & quote: 20–40 minutes on site
- Prep day: Remove old turf, amend/grade soil, rake smooth (½–1 day for most yards)
- Install day: Sod, rolling, watering, cleanup (same day for average front yards)
- Visible rooting: 10–14 days with diligent watering
- First mow: ~2–3 weeks, weather-dependent
- Fully established look: 4–8 weeks with proper care
FAQs (Sod Installation)
How soon do you schedule installs after approval?
Typically within 3–10 days depending on season and sod harvest windows.
Do you handle irrigation setup?
Yes—at minimum we set run times for the first two weeks and can tune zones. Drip is best for beds, but lawns need even sprinkler coverage.
Can I install sod during summer?
Yes—with vigilant watering the first 10–14 days, plus afternoon touch-ups if it’s hot or windy.
What if there are watering restrictions?
New lawns may qualify for temporary exemptions/permits in some municipalities. We’ll help you navigate local rules and schedule appropriately.
Will rain “count” as watering?
Light drizzle isn’t enough. Lift a corner—if the soil beneath is moist, you’re good; if not, water more.
How do you ensure seams don’t show?
We grade tight, lay in a brick pattern, butt edges snug, and roll for contact; early watering prevents shrink-gaps.
Maintenance Programs After Install
Keep your new lawn looking new. We offer seasonal care packages: spring aeration/overseeding, calibrated fertilization, irrigation tune-ups, and weekly mowing with crisp edging and post-service cleanups. Not ready for a package? We can do one-time refresh visits before parties, listings, or after a storm.
