Lawn Care Made Simple

blades of long green lush grass

Lawns are everywhere. We have them outside our homes, surrounding our residence like a green mote. We have them in parks and along highways, around commercial and industrial structures. There are sciences that study aspects like grass type or soil health.

The business of lawn care is a massive industry. ISBS World predicts that in the US alone, the gross revenue earned will be about $100 Billion dollars just to Landscaping and Lawn Care companies alone.

When one takes the time to try to break down the other services and industries that also fall somewhere under the umbrella of anything related to lawns, the value that wanting to have a strong, healthy strip of green lush grass becomes an important part of any local economy. It feeds a lot of families.

Planting and successfully growing a healthy lawn is not an easy feat. It takes some serious consideration. The first thing one needs to take the time to assess are factors such as exposure to the sun, water drainage, amount of water available for maintenance, and other harsh conditions including how much traffic across will cross or use it, all have to be reviewed.

Soil and the species of grass are the first two components of the next step in the process. If you’re lucky enough to have inherited healthy soil where you want to cover, it’s certainly easy and cheap to get started.

However, if you have bad soil that’s the first challenge to overcome.

Bad soil can be caused by a number of things. Here’s a few:

• Heavy clay content

• Overwhelming sand content

• Dominating pebbles/rock content

• Nutrient-deficient soil

• Too much water flowing through the soil

In these cases, the first thing that needs to be addressed it the quality. The solutions can include:

• A dump of fresh soil

• Excavation and replenishment of fresh soil

• Drainage system to divert water flow

• Adding compostable material to soil to
  build up soil nourishment value

The amount of time it takes to get your foundation in place will be dependant on your budget and choice of direction you take to solve the problem. You’re looking a few days to a few weeks.

Once this is all taken care of and you have a healthy soil and properly seeded it, then the next stage is nurturing it with love and care. The first few weeks are vital in the all over success of the planting and growing. We advise using a neon plastic tape to mark the boundaries so no one walks on it. Crushing the little, young and delicate blades of grass will only leave weaknesses, and even patches around the area.

With care and attention, within a shortish period of time, you’ll see your efforts springing to life. As long as you are maintaining a good watering schedule, you’re doing all you need to for now.

Probably the most harrowing of experiences during this process is when you’ve come to the point that the grass is green, lush and long. It’s now come to performing the first cut. Mowing the new lawn, for many, is the test of success.
